Courtenay is a legend in the annals of Grateful Dead.
He is the one who tie dyed their speaker covers in the early 70's.
He is artist behind the backdrops that graced the stage at the Greek Theatre at UCBerkeley in 1981, 1982, and 1983.
My first Grateful Dead shows were May 13, 14, and 15 1983, and Courtenay's backdrop is legend, I have a photo of the band playing Not Fade Away with John Cippolina from Quicksilver Messenger Service on second lead, playing Bob Weir's main guitar, while Bobby uses his back-up guitar.
And behind this line-up is Courtenay's amazing tie dye.
This shirt shows that he still has the magic.
Thanks Courtenay for inspiring a generation of artists to extend the boundaries of the tie dye art.
I started wearing a tie dye everyday in 1985, by 1987, I had tie dye pants and socks, In 2010, I dyed my shoes,
I have a few hundred tie dye shirts, a dozen pairs of pants, a few pairs of socks, ten hats, a slew of bandanas and a couple of complete outfits, Levi Trucker Jackets and Levi 501s, and a couple of sweatshirts.
